What is Conversion Rate?

Definition

Conversion rate is the percentage of website visitors who take the action you want — usually calling or booking a job. You calculate it by dividing conversions by total visitors, then multiplying by 100. If 100 people visit your HVAC site and 5 call, that's a 5% conversion rate.

Your conversion rate measures how well your website turns visitors into booked work. A "conversion" is whatever you count as a win — a phone call, a filled-out contact form, or a booked appointment. Take the number of those actions, divide by the total visitors over the same period, and multiply by 100 to get a percentage.

Here's the math on a real example: if 500 homeowners landed on your site last month and 25 of them called, your conversion rate is 25 divided by 500, times 100, which equals 5%. Most HVAC contractor sites land somewhere between 2% and 10%, depending on how fast the site loads, how easy it is to call, and whether the homeowner trusts what they see.

Traffic and conversion rate work together. You can get more jobs by sending more visitors to your site (SEO and ads) or by converting more of the visitors you already have (a faster site, a click-to-call button, real reviews, clear pricing). Fixing conversion rate is usually the cheaper win, because you're getting more out of clicks you already paid for.

Why it matters for HVAC contractors

Your conversion rate decides how many of your hard-won website visitors actually turn into booked HVAC jobs. A slow, confusing site can send half your traffic to a competitor without you ever knowing. Doubling your conversion rate doubles your calls from the same traffic — no extra ad spend needed. That's why we build fast, mobile-ready sites with click-to-call buttons and visible reviews, then back them with missed-call text-back so a missed ring still turns into a booked job instead of a lost one.
